“Young lady, where are you going?”

Mari screeched to a halt in the foyer. “Costumes, Daddy, for the play. Shay’s here to pick me up.”

“Shay? I thought I said, ‘Not today.’”

“You did.” She gave him her best imitation of a smile. “But I have to be fitted, and Mom said Grandma and Grandpa will be here in an hour, so I thought ...”

“You thought wrong.” Her father advanced behind her and, taking hold of the door, pulled it wider. “Where is he?”

Shay looked back at them from the cab of his truck. Her father stomped out of the house and down the walk.

“But, Daddy ...” Mari traipsed at his heels.

What was he about to do? He didn’t look particularly angry, and she’d never seen him yell at anyone—well, except her and Caleb. And Caleb deserved it.

Shay rolled his window down, his face a tad pale. “Mr. Tatum.”

“Mr. McNab, I told Mari her grandparents were coming today and she needed to stay home, yet here you are.”

Shay swallowed, his Adam’s apple bobbing. “Y-you did?”

The fact she hadn’t told him that was readily apparent. He looked at her then back at her Dad.

Her father crossed his arms and glanced down at her. “You didn’t tell him?”

She cast her gaze to her feet. “No. Mom took me to the doctor and I forgot until he texted me about the costumes, and ...”

“You should have reminded me of the costumes. I can take you,” her father said.

She curled her hands into fists and glanced up. “But Shay’s right here, and ...”

“And he can go on. I will take you.”

“Mr. Tatum, if I can say something.”

Her father paused. “Go ahead.”

“If I promise to bring her right back after, can she go? If you want, I’ll come in for a while. I don’t mind.”

Her father’s face altered, the harsh edges of his anger softening, his stance becoming looser. “I appreciate the offer, son. Please understand. We have a lot going on today and I think for now, it’s best if I take her myself.”

Mari’s heart sank into her toes and her plans evaporated. Her father would hover the whole time; there’d be no way to tell Shay. That left either Sunday or Tuesday, and Sunday would be hard with her grandparents around.

Her father revolved on his heel and strode toward the house. A few steps up the walk, he stopped. “I’ll give you a minute to talk, then I expect you back inside. I’ll find my keys.” He continued up the path.

She waited until her father went inside before opening the car door. She fell into Shay’s arms. “I’m sorry,” she mumbled into his chest. “I should’ve said.”

He stroked the back of her head. “It’s okay. He’s worried about you. I get it.”

She lifted her face to his. “I love you.”

He kissed her lightly. “I love you, too. I’ll see you there.”

The crunch of his tires on the pavement seemed to scrape at her conscience and place that much more weight on her shoulders. She shifted her feet and wished for one split second that some of it would leave.
